Smartbox is an open-source network server designed for ease of use and simplicity. It features a minimal hardware specification yet is incredibly resilient and packed with features. Users can control their Windows domains using Samba, employ a history-based backup and recover system with Rsnapshot, utilize simple software RAID with mirrored discs, and even take advantage of remote peer-to-peer backup to an untrusted peer – like another Smartbox.
Additionally, the Smartbox can serve as a groupware server with Wikidbase, Open-Xchange, OpenGroupware, and more. It also functions as an email server and has Asterisk software PBX capabilities to support a local VoIP phone system.
The Smartbox is based on the highly stable and well-supported Ubuntu Linux distribution. It's aimed at voluntary and non-profit organizations that require control over their network servers without the added cost of conventional ones. Users can add new network users or recover files from the backup system with ease.
The design of the Smartbox is based on research into the voluntary and community organization sector by the team members of Illuminate ICT, along with the findings of other ICT Hub projects. The web interface also makes configuration simple, while remote Smartbox-to-Smartbox backup is currently under development.
