I recently had the pleasure of trying out the Soul Force! distortion plugin, and I have to say, I was pretty impressed. The plugin has two different modes, Env and Wave, which each offer their own unique style of distortion.
When you switch the Source switch to Env and turn up the Feedback, you can create a gating effect that is controlled by the amplitude envelope of the input signal. On the other hand, switching the Source switch to Wave means that the shaping is controlled by the instantaneous output of the plugin, resulting in a harsh, abrasive distortion.
