Stager

September 29, 2009
Stager is a network statistics software that aggregates and displays data in an organized manner.

Stager is an excellent system for aggregating and presenting network statistics. It can be easily customized to handle any type of network statistics. The backend of the Stager project collects data and saves reports in a database. It automatically handles the hourly statistics aggregation into days, weeks, and months. The user-friendly web frontend allows data to be represented in tables, matrices, or plots. The reports are fully customizable, and their definitions are stored in the database.

To install Stager, it is recommended to check the UPGRADE file carefully if upgrading from a previous version. The current version of Stager only supports Netflow. Future releases will support various passive monitoring measurements, SNMP and roundtrip measurements. To run Stager, you will need PHP4 CLI with SNMP support. Debian users can install php4-cli and php4-snmp with ease.

The backend presents a simple installation process. You only need to create a new Postgresql user who can create new databases and then create another user who will run the Stager backend. The rest of the installation should be done by this user. After this step, you need to run stager-install.pl and edit netflow.cfg and getRouterInfo.cfg. You can then proceed to run db_install.pl, followed by getRouterInfo.php and get-netflow.pl. At the end of the installation, it is highly recommended to edit getRouterInfo.sh and crontab.

The frontend installation is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is run stager-install.pl and edit user.config.php.

The latest stable release of Stager, Version 2.0.1, comes with several bug fixes in both the frontend and backend. One major fix is that bookmarks with relative times now work properly. This means that you can create a report that shows data based on the last hour with available data and create a bookmark that will always show data for the last hour with available data.

In summary, Stager is a reliable and efficient system for presenting network statistics. It is highly customizable and easy to install. With its backend handling data aggregation and front-end presenting data in different formats, Stager is a must-have tool for anyone dealing with network statistics.
