Tagua is an all-in-one board game software for KDE that comprises of popular games such as Chess, Shogi, Xiangqi, and their variations.
Tagua is a versatile board game application that works seamlessly with KDE. It features an array of games, including classics such as Chess, Shogi, Xiangqi, and their corresponding variations. At the core of this project is a powerful plugin system that allows users to share the same graphical framework, game history handling, AI engine interoperability, and network server connectivity.
One of the key features of Tagua is the ability to play against the computer. The application supports XBoard protocol for communication with clients, allowing users to analyze moves and strategies in real-time. Additionally, users can edit and play local games, with a user-friendly and visually appealing move list control allowing easy visualization of complex subvariant nesting. It also supports loading and copying/pasting through the clipboard.
Tagua provides support for FICS/ICC compatible servers, where users can interact with the detachable console, play, examine, and observe games of their preferred variant. Furthermore, the extensible infrastructure of Tagua makes it easy to implement various board games. Currently implemented games include Chess, Crazyhouse, Shogi, Minichess, Minishogi, Sho Shogi, Xiangqi, Atomic, Monster Chess, Progressive Chess, Reversi, Connect Four, and Chain Reaction.
The advanced animation engine of Tagua improves the overall graphics experience, with easy extension on a per-variant basis. The powerful theme loader based on lua scripts allows users to dynamically create visual effects like drop-down shadows.
To use Tagua, users must have a KDE 4.x, Qt4, and boost 1.33. For this latest release, Tagua now supports localization, Czech and French translations, improved support for loading and saving PGN files, and new Shogi variants, among a number of other bugfixes.
