Their debut album, 200 Po Vstrechnoy, made history as the first from a Russian artist to reach gold status internationally. t.A.T.u. was a pop sensation in Russia from their beginnings in 2000, thanks to their savvy packaging and snappy pop songs. Lena, the redhead, and Julia, the brunette, were known for appearing on stage and in public as lesbian lovers, dressing in schoolgirl uniforms, kissing each other every chance they got, and being generally sassy.
