TSSHP is a software project that aims to deconstruct and then rewrite games developed by Looking Glass studio.
TSSHP (The System Shock Hack Project) is a software project designed to reverse-engineer and recode the 3D role-playing and shooter games from Looking Glass, including System Shock and the Ultima Underworlds. The project utilizes the original datafiles, but the code is rewritten from scratch.
The software includes a 3D renderer that allows the user to explore Citadel Station from System Shock, the Stygian Abyss, or the Labyrinth of Worlds. The renderer features texture mapping, drawn wall decals (including icons, switches, paintings, stains, and bullet holes), sprites, and 3D models. Additionally, the Cyberspace levels for System Shock are wire-framed and depth-cued.
Static and dynamic lighting is supported, including the Avatar's lamp for Underworld. The software also includes the sensaround multi-view display for System Shock and an automap feature present in both an MFD and as a transparent heads-up map in the main view.
Other transparencies, including force doors, bridges, and invisible mutants, are rendered for System Shock. To use the software, you must have Linux, X (tested under XFree86 4.2), development tools for C and X programming, SDL, SDL_mixer, and OpenGL.
New features in this release include linear lighting options for Underworld, Gouraud lighting support under OpenGL, a new nosound option, and the use of quadtrees in the real world (hybrid renderer).
