I recently had the opportunity to test Symfony, a web application framework written in PHP that follows the model-view-controller (MVC) paradigm. The framework provides an architecture, components, and tools, which allowed me to build complex web applications faster than usual, thanks to its ability to minimize repetitive coding tasks.
One of the most interesting things I experienced with this application was using the TurnKey Symfony Live CD appliance, which comes with all the standard features in TurnKey Core. Apart from that, there are several added features, including preconfigured project and frontend applications, enabled Symfony app security out of the box (XSS an CSRF), and PHP XSLT support required for database access.
Furthermore, the appliance comes with SSL support out of the box and PHPMyAdmin administration frontend for MySQL that listens on port 12322 and uses SSL. Additionally, Postfix MTA, bound to localhost, allows sending emails, such as password recovery. All secrets will be regenerated during installation/ first boot for added security.
Webmin modules help configure Apache2, PHP, MySQL, and Postfix. It is also essential to note that there are no auto-updates for Symfony, installed from an upstream tarball.
Users that desire to use frontend_dev.php must uncomment the check for localhost (127.0.0.1) in /var/www/symfony/web/frontend_dev.php. Default credentials for Webmin, Webshell, SSH, and MySQL are username root and no password, and users set a password during installation for added security.
