Unrawel

July 4, 2007
Unrawel is a software library focused on providing various methods for the interpolation and manipulation of RAW images captured via digital cameras.

Platform Linux
Supported Languages English

Developed by Alexander Tsvyashchenko
Unrawel is a versatile library and command-line front-end that I developed to experiment with various techniques for digital camera image interpolation and processing. The software covers a range of areas, including RAW image interpolation, image de-noising, and white balance determination.

It is important to note that Unrawel was primarily designed for my personal use in research and experimentation, rather than as a tool for the general public. As such, its features and interface may not be well-suited to those seeking a "hit a single button to get results" type of tool. Users will need to construct their own workflow to suit their specific needs, which may involve some post-processing outside of Unrawel.

However, for those seeking maximum control over their image processing, Unrawel may be exactly what they need. The software boasts a number of key features, including support for custom workflow design, as well as the ability to read RAW files produced by digital cameras (currently supporting Canon CRW files for several cameras). Users can also compile in support for ImageMagick to enable reading and writing in different image formats, while LCMS (little cms edgine) is supported for color profile embedding and conversions.

Unrawel also offers a range of interpolation algorithms, such as adaptive color planes, simple bilinear, corner, adaptive hues, Freeman median, multi-gradient, and weighted sums interpolation. Some of these algorithms were developed as experimental techniques by the author, while others are more well-known. Of particular note is the "Adaptive hues interpolation" algorithm, which delivers superior results by ensuring constancy over hue rather than brightness.

In addition to interpolation, Unrawel also includes various image processing and enhancement algorithms, such as noise filtering using anisotropic diffusion flow and median filtering based on "adaptive direction median." Users can take advantage of a set of simple filters, as well as noise filtering using Total Variation and image enhancement using hue correction and diffusion flow.

Finally, Unrawel provides a range of white balance calculation algorithms, such as dichromatic, "grey world," and "white patch." Overall, Unrawel is a sophisticated tool that offers a high-level of control and customization for those seeking ultimate flexibility and precision in their digital image processing.
