Alternatively, you can reload the panel by killing it, using the command "killall gnome-panel." To find the Process Name, you can cat out the contents of the Lock File, and if it is a process ID number (PID), you can print the name of the process that owns it. In VaryOnApplet's preferences, set the Process Name to the Lock File owner.
VaryOnApplet is a general-purpose toggle that doesn't require any specific content in the lock file. It doesn't demand any particular relationship between the presence of the lock file, Start and Stop commands, or any Start/Stop commands, for that matter.
To run VaryOnApplet, you need GTK+ version 2.2.x and Python 2.3. The latest release accommodates name changes in the gnomeapplet module.
