Platform Linux

Developed by Christophe Gros
Volume Sharing Manager (Vsman) is a powerful utility that allows you to manage directory sharing on the server side. Whether you need to manage NFS v3 or V4, Vsman has you covered. It even has the capability of being extended to other volume sharing systems so you can implement whatever sharing system is best for your needs.

One great feature of Vsman is that you can select an NFS v4 server interface in the preferences dialog box. If needed, you can also display the NFS v4 specific mounting options by invoking Vsman with the flag '-4'. It's important to note that Vsman must be run as root in order to work correctly.

When you open Vsman, you'll immediately notice the tree view of known directories on the left-hand side of the screen. Each directory is color-coded for easy identification. Green indicates that the directory is exported but not mounted, yellow means the directory is exported and mounted, and red indicates that the directory is unexported. Clicking on an access will display its mounting options on the left side of the screen.

Creating a new volume is simple with Vsman. Just enter the name of the corresponding directory, and the utility will take care of the rest. You can also delete or create accesses for the current volume. When creating a new access, Vsman will prompt you for a suitable host name, network name or address, or netgroup name. You also have the option of selecting "NIS" in the preferences dialog box to fetch hosts, networks, users and groups from your NIS domain name.

If you need to re-export all and synchronize Vsman with the exported volumes declared in /etc/exports, simply select the Reexport menu. You can also unexport a single mounting host or unexport the whole volume. The Start / Stop menu allows you to stop or restart the NFS server, while the Save menu writes the NFS /etc/exports file and reexports all volumes.

Vsman was built with Ada 95 and uses gtkada 2.4 as the toolkit. You'll need to install gnat 4.1.x or later to take advantage of all the features Vsman has to offer. The latest version of the software includes important bug fixes, hostname lookup, and an improved compilation and installation process.

Overall, Vsman is an essential tool for anyone who needs to manage directory sharing on the server side. With its user-friendly interface and powerful features, it's a must-have for any system administrator.
