I recently had the chance to try out wmCube, a dockapp designed to display a dynamic rotating 3D object and the current CPU load. This software is actually a modified and optimized version of wmCube 0.98, which was originally available for download at a particular website.

One aspect that sets this program apart from the original is that it comes with some fantastic new features that make it even more user-friendly. Some of these features include speedy redraws, a dramatic reduction in CPU usage, and the option to specify colors for both flat-shaded and wireframe objects. Additionally, the program features transparent CPU load and zoom buttons. The flip side? The 'roll-in' sequence that was part of the original version has been removed. However, the breadth of new offerings essentially makes up for the loss.

It is worth noting that while the wmCube author has been too busy to review these changes, I have been given approval to release this modified version to the public. It is also important to mention that the Makefiles for systems other than Linux will require modification to use gdk libraries. Therefore, if you encounter issues with the installation, be sure to check out README.GDK that can be found inside the tarball for helpful hints on where to start. If you decide to make changes for your system and want to submit an updated Makefile, please send it to me. I will be so grateful!

Overall, installing wmCube is very straightforward. Here's how:

1. First, extract the tar archive file wmcube-0.98.tar.gz.
2. Then, navigate to the new folder that was created 'wmcube/wmcube'.
3. Using the command 'make', you can set up the installation for Linux. Or, if you're running a different operating system, you can use 'make -f Makefile.xxx' instead, where 'xxx' is the name of your OS.
4. To complete the installation process, you have the option to become the root user by using 'su root'.
5. With root privileges, you can then run the 'make install' command.
6. Finally, start the program with 'wmcube &' or use the command 'wmcube -h' for additional command line options.

All in all, I would say that wmCube is a superb dockapp that is incredibly functional. If you are looking for an efficient and visually appealing CPU monitor, you are sure to enjoy this program.
