X/OS Linux is a software package derived from the Free/Open Source rpm packages of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) while following their trademark policy. The development team has ensured to avoid using Red Hat's trademarks in any way that would suggest affiliation with or endorsement by Red Hat. The latest release of X/OS Linux 4.0 is now available to the public after a delay. The team has invested significant effort to provide enterprise-grade Linux in this milestone release.
X/OS Linux 4.0 is available for both x86 and x86_64 processor architectures, featuring the latest "best-of-breed" Free and Open Source software for both 32- and 64-bit platforms. The updated 2.6 Linux kernel boasts numerous enhancements over the previous 2.4 version. Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) applies granular security policies, and storage capabilities have improved, supporting file systems of up to 8TB and more. Global File System (GFS) and Cluster Suite software are included in this release, allowing the creation and management of advanced cluster configurations.
X/OS Linux 4.0 provides an advanced server platform while also enhancing the desktop usability. This includes greatly improved office productivity tools, plug-and-play USB device recognition, and power management compatible with the ACPI standard. X/OS Linux strives to include various other useful packages and tools conforming to the standard for mature and robust "enterprise-grade" software, such as offering Xfce, an extra option in addition to Gnome and KDE, tailored for low-end or thin client systems.
X/OS Linux 5.1 package set is identical to the combined package sets of RHEL 5.1 Client and RHEL 5.1 Server, with a few exceptions, such as the exclusion of all Red Hat Network (RHN) related packages. Various updates released for RHEL 5.1 have been included, and the yum package has been updated to version 3.2.1. Additionally, modifications were made to the original packages, including the addition of an installclass to Anaconda, supporting various alternatives for installing X/OS Linux 5, and the removal of Red Hat trademarks and logos.
