Developed by Blender Institute
Blender Institute is back with yet another open project after successfully launching Orange and Peach. This time, it's not just any movie, but a 3D game, called Apricot. Commencing from February 1, 2008, the project will be developed by the best 3D artists and developers. The goal of this project is to create an industry-standard open source 3D game pipeline through collective teamwork by a small team and the online community. The characters in the game are based on the short 3D animation of Peach.

The game production is scheduled to conclude at the end of July 2008, with August being devoted to DVD and documentation making. The members of the team will get a studio facility and housing, along with reimbursements on all travel costs, and payment to cover all expenses for the period, making it a great option for developers.

The game is cross-platform, aiming at having it run on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. Blender will be used for modeling and animation, Crystal Space as 3D engine and delivery platform, and Python for scripting. The goal is to achieve a top-notch gaming experience and validate the open-source 3D game creation pipeline. The game's environment will be outdoors set in a forest, with funny and furry characters.

The team will endeavor to create a full functional game prototype, which matches industry standards. While working on the game’s development, the team will also be targeting to develop and improve the open-source 3D game creation pipeline, including HDR lighting, character animation, and animation prototyping. Open-source licensing will be used (GPL/LGPL), and open content (Creative Commons) will be delivered.

For financing, Blender Foundation and Crystal Space community will be the primary benefactors. Supporting the project will be Grupo Ikusnet and Dutch Game Days Foundation, while seeking further subsidies from concerned sponsors. The Blender Foundation will also organize pre-sale campaigns to offer DVD sets in advance.

Apricot would be the second Open Project launched by Blender Institute in Amsterdam after the massive success of Peach.
