Zip Tools software allows users to install zip 2.32 and unzip 5.52 files for compression and decompression purposes.
I recently tested Zip Tools and must say, it's a great package. As most Mac users know, Apple includes zip and unzip in their OS X, which can be accessed through the contextual menu in the Finder. But unfortunately, these implementations leave much to be desired. They don't offer encryption, and zip includes resourcefork folders in the archive (which we don't always want).
Because I noticed that several users and myself rely on zip and unzip for various applications or scripts, I decided to give Zip Tools a try. The package includes the unmodified versions from Info-ZIP in a user-friendly installer. Once installed, the package provides the funzip, fzipnote, unzip, unzipsfx, zip, zipcloak, zipgrep, zipinfo and zipsplit binaries on the machine in the /usr/local/bin/ directory, along with manual pages in the /usr/share/man/man1/ directory.
Zip Tools avoids placing the binaries in the same directory as where Apple places them when the Developer Tools are installed to prevent any possible duplication. Although this shouldn't pose any problems, those with the Developer Tools are most likely experienced enough to remove duplicate files themselves. It's also essential to note that these binaries are meant to be used from the Terminal and don't come with a GUI, let alone an Aqua one.
The latest release, version 1.1, includes an installer that works with OS X 10.4 and new versions from zip (2.32) and unzip (5.52). Overall, I would highly recommend Zip Tools to anyone looking for a reliable, easy-to-use zip and unzip package.
