Developed by Alpine Messaging System
Alpine is an excellent email client that caters to both novice and expert users. With its quick and straightforward features, Alpine is a perfect fit for everyone who deals with emails. Developed by the department of Computing & Communications at the University of Washington, Alpine is based on the Pine Message System, also produced by the same institution.

Users can interact with the email client through exploration or rely on context-sensitive help. They can customize their experience using the Alpine Setup command, which provides high flexibility, and improve their workflow. Furthermore, Alpine is released under the Apache License, Version 2.0, with all the source required to build Unix, Windows, and web-based mail user agents included.

The installation process for Alpine is relatively straightforward. The build process relies on GNU autotools, and in most cases, generating a suitable Alpine binary from the source distribution is as simple as typing two simple commands. A list of configuration options and default Alpine settings is also available by typing a specific command. However, it's essential to note that the included UW IMAP Toolkit used for mailbox access does not have the same configuration process, necessitating manual interventions in rare cases.

For the PC_Alpine build, the process is based on the Microsoft C compiler and libraries. Alpine team includes visual studio 8 to generate suitable binaries. For the Web Alpine application, there are additional steps required to build and install all the components. The Alpine mailer is the executable file produced after compiling. It should work perfectly on the system with no other files than this binary, although it is possible to create configuration files for customization purposes. Additionally, the stand-alone editor similar to the Alpine message composer and the standalone file system navigator are available.

To run Alpine in client/server mode, the IMAP daemon is required, which is also included in the Alpine bundle. Other useful utilities include RPload and RPdump, which allow uploading and downloading of local pinerc and address book to/from an IMAP server. Lastly, Mailutil, a utility for performing various operations on mailboxes, regardless of being local or remote, is also available.

Overall, Alpine is a versatile email client that provides fast and simple email-related solutions. Its high customization options make it an efficient and robust tool for both individuals and companies, and its availability to Unix, Windows, and web-based mail user agents makes it an accessible and widely adopted solution in the market.
