I recently tried out the SMC Firmware Update, and I'm happy to report that it definitely improves the sensing and accuracy of the MagSafe Power Adapter indicator light, as well as the battery charge indicator lights on MacBook (Late 2008) computers. Once the update is finished, your SMC Version will be updated to 1.38f5.
The updater application itself is very straightforward and easy to use. It will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder, and you just need to follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process.
Here are the steps you need to follow to update the SMC firmware on your MacBook:
1. Make sure your computer's power cord is connected and plugged into a working power source.
2. Quit all other open applications.
3. Click Restart in the MacBook SMC Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to restart. The SMC firmware update starts automatically and a status bar will show the progress of the update. During the update, your computer fans will run at full speed, but they'll return to normal once the process is complete. Important: do not interrupt the update.
4. Once the update is finished, your computer will restart automatically and open the MacBook SMC Firmware Update. Click OK and you're good to go!
If for some reason you see these instructions again, it means the update was not successful. In that case, just repeat steps 2 and 3 until it works properly. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this update if you're using a Late 2008 MacBook and want to improve the accuracy of your battery and power indicators.
