Developed by Martin Kluge
APSR is a network testing tool that excels in sending and receiving arbitrary network packets. The tool is perfect for testing firewalls, routing, security, and other functionalities. The APSR project is composed of two main programs, apsend and aprecv, which are just what you need to send and sniff packets, respectively. The primary objective of the APSR project is to deliver a high-quality network testing tool that does not compromise on its features.

APSR offers many outstanding features, including sending and receiving packets, outputting and documenting information in various languages, easy installation with autoconf/automake support, configuration files, and log files and filters in multiple formats such as text, XML, SQL, gdbm, and CSV. The tool also provides Syslog and database (SQL) interfaces, daemon mode, thread support, IP(v4/v6) and MAC resolving, broadcast/multicast support, special "packet-sets," client/server system, HTML-based management system, and graphical user interfaces/front ends (GUIs/FEs), such as GTK/QT/ncurses. With module support using a simple packet construction language (PCL) and plugin support for Perl/Python or Perl/Ruby, APSR stands out as a well-rounded network testing tool.

While APSR supports over 110 different protocol headers in version 0.17-12 and creates packets for 30 different protocols, the list of final 1.0 protocol support remains unknown. Although it is essential to mention that the application layer protocols will be implemented shortly through a simple module API. The modules can be written in C or theoretically in any other language, as they are dynamically loaded.

The latest release of APSR brings to the table a lot of fixes for compilation problems and code cleaning. Additionally, it solves some (Free)BSD-specific bugs. Although there are no new features added, users are encouraged to upgrade to this release, as it provides an overall more robust experience. In conclusion, APSR is a reliable and robust network testing tool, packed with features and adaptable to multiple situations.
