As a modified version of the well-known sparse eigensolver ARPACK, ARPACK with Autotools offers a range of changes and improvements. Firstly, it includes the most recent patches available from the ARPACK download page. Additionally, a nasty bug that had the potential to cause crashes has been fixed.
One of the biggest changes with ARPACK with Autotools is the replacement of the build system with autoconf/automake. This modernises the build process and makes it far easier to build ARPACK on a variety of different machines. Now, simply using the regular "./configure make make install" command will suffice.
Developer comments also note that while ARPACK with Autotools is a modified version of the original program, it's still incredibly useful. Over time, ARPACK's build system started to feel quite old-fashioned, causing problems. That's why the developer decided to take matters into their own hands and modernise it.
In addition to the improved build system, ARPACK with Autotools also makes it easy to build a shared library of ARPACK. As there isn't a proper version numbering system in place for ARPACK on the original site, the developer has elected to start the versioning system at 0.90.
