Autofs NG is a Linux autofs automounter designed for interoperability.
Autofs NG is an automounting software designed specifically for Linux systems with a goal of seamless interoperability with other Unix platforms. This software offers unique features above what other Linux automounters offer like direct mounts, browsing, lazy mounting, and unmounting of hierarchical multimounts. Additionally, it supports the usual indirect map support that can be found in different systems. The maps are supported in various formats including flat files, executable maps, NIS maps, NIS+ maps, LDAP maps, and hesiod (DNS) filsys namespace.
Initially developed at Sun Microsystems, AutofsNG was released under GPL after the cancellation of the project. The software still gathers support from dedicated software developers who continue its development in their free time.
In this release, there are several improvements made, including a fixup of initscript for the path to /proc/mounts, which is now symlinked to /etc/mtab if you want to see what is actually mounted with calling mount. Also, the developers have worked on the initscript to fix the problem experienced in SuSE/LSB where ypbind wasn't necessarily started before autofsng was initiated. There is now an RPM .spec file available in the tree, and possible crash when using the -hosts map has been fixed.
AutofsNG has added the ability to translate mount options, although it is hardcoded currently. A bug where the -hosts map would return duplicate map offsets, which is a semantic error for usual entries, has been fixed. Additionally, the initscript fixups were made for unknown systems, Debian in particular.
