Autoresponse

Autoresponse is a useful autoresponder software for postfix. It is a project included in the "postfix deployment tools" package, developed by Charles Hamilton. However, it can be used with almost any postfix setup. The autoresponse script is called by postfix pipe(8), similar to how one would call a content filter. The tool also allows minor content filtering; however, doing so will require intermediate level knowledge of bash and minor hacking of the autoresponse script.

The autoresponse command syntax is easy to understand. It includes various options such as -s, -r, -e, -d, -E, -D, and -h. The -s and -r options are essential to identifying the sender and recipient of an autoresponse message. Additionally, the -e option allows creating or editing an existing autoresponse message for a specific user. If a disabled autoresponse message already exists, the tool will ignore it and create a new message.

Furthermore, the -d option disables an active autoresponse message. The -E option enables an existing autoresponse message. If both disabled and active autoresponse messages exist, the active message will be overwritten by the disabled one. Lastly, the -D option deletes an existing autoresponse message, but it will not remove disabled autoresponse messages. Additionally, the -h option prints the autoresponse help menu.
