I recently had the opportunity to use avpmilter, a sendmail milter interface to the Kaspersky antivirus daemon, and was extremely impressed with its capabilities. As a tool designed to get virus scan results and send reject messages upon detection, this program is not an MTA (mail transfer agent) or antivirus program itself.
One of the primary benefits of avpmilter is that it can significantly improve the performance of your mail subsystem when compared to Kaspersky's kavkeeper. While kavkeeper will reinject each message for each recipient back to sendmail MTA, causing 30 requests to the antivirus daemon and 30 additional executions of the sendmail program, avpmilter only sends one request to the antivirus daemon and will not initiate additional executions of sendmail program. As a small, resident, multithreaded program, avpmilter also avoids expensive fork() calls.
Avpmilter also has little impact on your current sendmail configuration, and the milter interface allows you to run sendmail MTA and filter on different computers. However, it's important to note that avpmilter requires sendmail 8.11.x or 8.12.x built with milter support (which is the default option for sendmail 8.12).
