Awesome is a window manager software that uses tiling and is based on a rewritten version of dwm code. It allows for efficient and customizable organization of open windows.
I had the opportunity to use and review the tiling window manager software called "awesome". This software is based on a dwm code rewriting and is incredibly fast, small, dynamic and just plain awesome. The software allows for several layouts to manage windows including tiled and floating modes.
One standout feature of the tiled layout mode is that windows can be managed master and stacking areas. This is useful when you need to focus on specific windows and is excellent at optimizing the environment for the application in use and the task performed. Additionally, the tiled layout assures that no space is wasted on your screen with no gaps, no overlap.
With the floating layout option, windows can be resized and moved freely, just like a usual window manager. Dialog windows are always managed floating, regardless of the layout selected. This feature works as a regular window management system would, allowing for easy use and familiarity.
The windows in awesome are also grouped by tags, which can be assigned to each window. This makes selecting certain tags easy, as it displays all windows with those tags. Each tag can have its layout, making it more powerful than virtual desktops. Users can quickly merge and show several tags at the same time and go back to only one after necessary.
Finally, awesome contains a small status bar, displaying all available tags, the layout, the title of the focused window, and text read from standard input. The selected tags are highlighted with a different color, while the tags of the focused window are highlighted with a small point. awesome draws a small border around windows to indicate their focus state.
