binkd

Binkd is a TCP/IP daemon that provides file transfer capabilities between two Fidonet systems. It supports the "Binkley-Style outbound" feature, a common feature found in most Fidonet software. Although Binkd uses its own protocol called Binkp, this is not a significant issue as it has become one of the most popular fidonet-over-IP technologies in the former USSR since its inception in Nov 1996.

It is important to note that Binkd cannot and never will make calls via regular telephone lines. Therefore, it should be used alongside any other Bink-style Fidonet mailer, rather than as a replacement. Binkd works well with several mailers such as Ifmail, Brake!, Bink/+, McMail, T-Mail, and Xenia.

Binkd comes with ANSI C sources, making it possible to build it in almost any environment that supports Berkeley sockets API, with multitasking being a bonus. Supported environments include UNIX (AIX, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux, Solaris), OS/2, NT, DOS, and Windows'95 ports. Installation is easy and follows two simple steps, which entail editing the sample binkd.cfg file and running Binkd.

This new release of Binkd introduces several features and bug fixes, such as the addition of the "temp-inbound" option in binkd.cfg - directory for incomplete receiving files (.dt and .hr) and the new options "socks" and "proxy" in binkd.cfg by Dima Afanasiev. Other improvements include the MD5 authorization feature and the new command-line switch "-m" to disable MD5 authorization. In addition, immediate events (beginning with '!') now run immediately after file receiving, while macros such as *F (file name), *H (host name), *A0..*A9 (remote addresses), *L (listed), and *P (protected) are now available in events.
