Buzztard is an open-source software project with a goal of providing a free alternative to the currently Windows-only, proprietary program Buzz that is also open source.
Buzztard is a free and open-source software project that aims to provide a replacement for the currently Windows-only and closed source software Buzz. While the original Buzz is no longer being developed due to the loss of the main developer's source code, Buzztard is here to pick up the slack.
Our software is based on a modular approach, which follows some of the ideas behind Buzz, but we're hoping to improve its usability. We're not creating a 1:1 copy, however. Buzztard has no direct link to Buzz, apart from some concepts we've borrowed.
We've made it easy for Buzz users to transition to our software, as we provide song-file import and Buzz-machine reuse. Buzztard's objective is a music production environment similar to FastTracker or the original AMIGA SoundTracker, where songs are created using a sequence with tracks, and each track contains patterns with events.
Unlike the Tracker programs, tracks aren't just sample players. A song has a setup where virtual audio plugins can be arranged and linked together. Each machine can be controlled in real-time or via patterns in the sequencer. Buzztard is the editor we've created using this approach, but it's just one possible application of the framework we plan to implement.
Our framework has potential beyond just music production. We can build tools such as DJ mixing applications or live session composers with it. Our main goal is to get as far as Buzz is currently and continue beyond that. We have loads of ideas to improve Buzztard's usability and production potential. Buzztard won't be just a clone of Buzz. Instead, it will live beyond it!
