The Calculate Directory Server is a software tool that enables users to manage and organize information about users, groups, and computing resources in a network. I recently had the opportunity to try out Calculate Linux, a Gentoo-based distribution designed to be user-friendly in terms of installation, updates, and general use. The software comes in two editions: Calculate Linux Desktop (CLD) and Calculate Directory Server (CDS). While CLD is designed for desktop use, CDS acts as a free operating system based on Gentoo and functions as an LDAP-server, storing settings applications, user accounts, and access licenses centerally. The package Calculate-server is used to configure and administer the server.
The software boasts several useful features, including centralized user authorization and storage of session settings on the server. Additionally, there are options to support storage for Samba, Mail, ftp, jabber, and proxy services accounts in the LDAP, and the administration of the LDAP server is simple using Unix-like commands such as cl-useradd, cl-usermod, cl-passwd, cl-groupmod, and more. Replication for the mail and Samba servers is supported, as is centralized updating of servers and workstations, and the creation of backup copies with application settings for rebuilding.
One of the standout features of Calculate Linux is the ability to work using the livecd, which enables full booting in the memory. The software supports a variety of languages, including English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and French. It also supports installation on HDD and USB-HDD with file-system options of ext4, ext3, ext2, reiserfs, xfs, and jfs.
