Caliph & Emir is a Java-based software that uses MPEG-7 technology for digital photo and image annotation and retrieval. It enables graph-like annotation for semantic metadata and content-based image retrieval using MPEG-7 descriptors. This software has many features that make it an excellent tool for this task.

One of the features of Caliph is the extraction of IPTC and EXIF metadata, which is then converted to MPEG-7. It also extracts various content-based image retrieval descriptors, such as ColorLayout, ScalableColor, and EdgeHistogram.

Caliph comes with a robust annotation system that allows users to annotate images with free text metadata, structured text metadata, quality ratings, and Semantic Annotations. It is based on an editable catalogue, which enables the easy reuse of semantic objects, such as specific persons and places.

The fully visual and graphical user interface of Caliph makes it easy to use. It also has an automatic placement and layout feature for visual descriptions. Caliph also enables users to export semantic descriptions to structured text descriptions and load and save annotations as MPEG-7 XML files.

Emir, on the other hand, specializes in retrieval of annotations. Users can search annotations using the file system with XPath queries, quality constraints, and example images for content-based image retrieval. The software also enables retrieval of annotations using a Lucene index.

Emir also has a graphical query editor, and users can retrieve semantic graphs based on a Lucene-powered index. It supports wildcards for relations and nodes and is based on the query expansion. Emir also features a 2D data repository visualization based on the FastMap algorithm for image content descriptors ColorLayout, ScalableColor, and EdgeHistogram.

A recent release of the software includes maintenance fixes such as Scalable Color descriptor extraction, EdgeHistogramImpl updates, and PPM and BMP images' support. Users should note that Java 6.0 is required for the binary version, and 1.5 is necessary for compilation.

Overall, Caliph & Emir is an exceptional tool for digital photo and image annotation and retrieval, with many features to streamline the process.
