CarWorld is a driving simulator/demo software that I use to test out different aspects of interest. Originally developed while I was a student, Car World includes full source code that is released under the GNU General Public License.
The graphics rendering in Car World is impressive, and version v0.072 features an OpenGL-based renderer that allows for file input and the display of texture-mapped models with interpolated surface normals. The addition of real-time projected shadows, as seen in the dino lights example, adds a touch of realism to the simulation. Users can modify visual and simulation parameters through the command line, making it easy to tailor the experience to their preferences.
The mechanics in Car World are based on classical mechanics and use standard metrics such as Newtons, meters, and seconds. There are no constraints on the environment surface, and the use of variable-length time increments and variable increment numbers means that "CarWorld time" is not dependent on frame rate.
Users can adjust various simulation specs, including metrics, mass, moment of inertia around the rotation axis, suspension pre-load, compression damping, rebound damping, engine torque output, air friction, and surface friction.
The only requirement for Car World is Simple DirectMedia Layer, which is simple to acquire. In the latest version, users can expect an improvement in performance as Car World now compiles with gcc 4.1.
