Cereal is an excellent emulation framework that has been created to make it easier to emulate interconnected modules. Its main component is a powerful 8051 emulator module, making it the perfect choice for anyone looking to emulate 8051. The reason behind creating this software was to solve a problem involving an 8051 embedded controller that needed to regulate an engine's output using pulse-width modulation while also monitoring the resulting flow from a flowmeter.
In the widely used conventional emulators, emulating two seconds by hand for this task is nearly impossible due to the need to compute the engine input, real flow, and feedback frequency. Cereal helps make this process a lot easier and faster. It only took about two hours to create a module emulating the engine/flowmeter combination, including a window showing the current values. This step alone would have taken a lot longer with conventional emulators.
Another example of Cereal's advanced capabilities is the easy emulation of a multiplexed display/keyboard combination. By creating a module that displays the results graphically as four displays, one no longer needs to watch the port bits. Cereal offers a lot more than just emulation. The GUI for Cereal is designed using the KDE framework and can be extended with KParts (8051 interface provided as a KParts plugin).
