That means when you download a chess game from the internet, you'll typically be dealing with files with the extension pgn (e.g. kasparov.pgn).

If you're using popular chess playing software like FRITZ, ARENA, or WINBOARD, you'll need your games to be in algebraic notation - specifically in English language - and adhere to pgn standards or they simply won't open. But don't worry, pgn files are simply normal text files that can be opened with Notepad or other editors, where they can be adjusted or modified as needed.
