Convince Me is a Java software designed for generating and analyzing arguments, which is available for free and as an open-source application. The software uses ECHO, a connectionist model to provide feedback to users regarding the coherence of their arguments.
Convince Me guides users in a cyclic manner to categorize their propositions as evidence or hypotheses, and indicate the reliability of their various evidence. They are also required to connect their propositions with explanatory and contradictory/competitive links and rate each proposition's believability. After each cycle, users can get feedback from ECHO to enhance the coherence of their arguments.
Studies have suggested that even scientific reasoning experts find it difficult to distinguish the characteristics of data and theory. Convince Me employs a sophisticated approach to enhance the discriminative abilities of novices, making their epistemic categorizations more expert-like both during and after the use of the software.
