Darkstat is a network traffic analyzer that functions as a packet sniffer, collecting and analyzing various statistics. However, it's important to note that Darkstat is no longer under active development or maintenance, as the creator no longer has time or a need for it.
The original purpose for the creation of Darkstat was to meet specific requirements for a network link monitor. However, the creator now uses traf instead. Development for Darkstat 3 began long ago, but has since stalled due to other priorities taking precedence. The creator is open to someone else taking over, and even considered uploading a "work in progress" tarball on the page.
Darkstat has been tested and functions effectively under Gentoo Linux and FreeBSD STABLE. Although it may have compatibility issues with OpenBSD and NetBSD, it does function to some extent on these systems.
