DAViCal is a CalDAV protocol-based server designed to store iCalendar-format calendaring resources. It offers a reliable and scalable system for efficient management of events, schedules, and appointments.
The CalDAV specification has been in development for some years, with increasing pressure from the open source world for a shared calendaring solution. There are a number of approaches to shared calendaring, but implementing CalDAV seemed like the best option as it is a good specification with the potential for rich user experiences.
The main goal of the CalDAV client-server protocol is to manage and report on collections of calendar resources. The developers chose PHP as it is widely available and Apache as it is also a common choice. PostgreSQL was chosen as the database for its free, open-source availability and compliance with the ACID model.
To make setup as easy as possible, the RSCDS should be installed on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution using readily available signed packages. The goal is to increase automation and simplicity in the Debian release, and make other distributions more user-friendly.
The RSCDS should not require significant maintenance to continue operating. Administration is kept simple to support organizations of up to several hundred staff. The server-side aspect is minimized to support CalDAV and storage of calendar resources.
Administration is done through a web-based application, with no initial plans for a web-based view of calendars. It is not likely that calendars will ever be maintainable through a web-based client, although the server should support the use of such clients that work with CalDAV.
