Desktop Pets is a fun software that enables users to have little virtual pets on their screens. These pets are capable of running around randomly or following the mouse cursor depending on what the user selects. Additionally, users can adjust various behaviors by accessing Settings through either the File menu or the contextual menu from right-clicking a pet. Changing the image or adding more pets is also possible with this software.
The program is based on Neko 98 by David Harvey, which was a port of the X-Windows Neko by Masayuki Koba. The X-Windows Neko itself was based on the Macintosh Neko DA by Kenji Gotoh, which in turn was based on the original Neko for NEC PC-8901. The software's creator made this program because there was no port of Neko 98 or X-Windows Neko for Mac OS, and they believed that there needed to be a desktop toy specifically for Macintosh.
