A software that allows users to play music from a digital library, similar to a traditional jukebox.
EarCandy is a music juke-box software that offers an innovative way to present music collections. It sorts music by album, artist, and title, disregarding the underlying directory structure. This software is written in Python, utilizing Gtk toolkit for the user interface. Eventually, users will have the option to switch to AnyGui for the ui, once they release a stable version.
EarCandy uses an external player to play tracks. In Unix/Linux, it currently supports only the xmms player. The player must be running to play music as EarCandy will not start it for you. On Windows, winamp is supported. Users can initially run the application by executing the 'earcandy.py' script in the respective folder. In Windows, just run earcandy.exe.
The first time it runs, users need to provide the path to their music files. Then, the software automatically scans that path for mp3 files and adds them to an index. This index file is saved so that it doesn't have to rescan on every run. However, users can rescan the directory if they add new tracks and need to rebuild the index.
The main window comprises 4 list boxes, arranged as follows: Collections, Artists, Albums, and Tracks. Collections allow users to add external collections and reference music within them. Artists is the list of all artists in the collection, and Albums is the list of albums for the selected artist. Lastly, Tracks is the list of tracks for the selected album.
To play an album or track, simply double-click on it. There is a context menu available when the right mouse button is pressed on an album or track. For albums, the menu has items to play the album and enqueue the album. It is similar for tracks.
Enqueuing an album or track allows it to be added to the list of songs being played in the music player without disrupting the current playlist. Overall, EarCandy offers a unique way of organizing music that is simple and easy to use.
