Erlang is a programming language created at the Ericsson Computer Science Laboratory. Its open-source version is now available and aims to promote the utilization of Erlang beyond Ericsson.
During the installation process, the entire system, except for a small start-up script, can be stored in a personalized directory chosen by the installer. The only requirement is that the file system has enough free space and that Erlang/OTP users have read access to it. In this case, assuming the directory tree is located at /usr/local/erlang which is referred to as the top-level directory, the compressed tar file's name should read < PREFIX >.tar.gz, where < PREFIX > denotes the specific Erlang/OTP release.
Since the tape archive does not have one specific directory where all files are rooted, it must be extracted into an empty directory. The following steps must be followed to install Erlang: create the top-level directory if it does not exist, change to the top-level directory, create the installation directory with an appropriate name, change to the installation directory, extract the compressed tar file into the installation directory, read the README file for last-minute updates, and then run the Install script in the installation directory.
Once installed, the only thing the user needs to do is make Erlang/OTP available for users by adding the path /usr/local/erlang/otp_r7b/bin to the user's $PATH variable, or they can link the executable /usr/local/erlang/otp_r7b/bin/erl accordingly. Users will be prompted only once for their preference and will then be able to proceed with their work.
This release of Erlang involves numerous minor bugfixes and documentation updates, making the experience even smoother for its users.
