errormarker

July 2, 2008
Errormarker is a Vim plug-in that detects and labels lines with compile errors by highlighting them in the editor.
Version 0.1.11
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage www.vim.org
Developed by Michael Hofmann
Errormarker is a Vim plugin that highlights and sets error markers for lines with compile errors. It hooks the make quickfix command and converts all compiler errors into signs that are placed next to the line with the error. Additionally, lines with errors are highlighted. The plugin allows users to hover over such a line to get the error message in a tooltip (only gui). The error markers will be updated on every call to :make.

Vim is a popular text editor first released by Bram Moolenaar in 1991 for the Amiga computer. Designed as an extended version of the vi editor, Vim includes many additional features that are helpful in editing program source code. Vim is free and open source software under a software license compatible with the GNU General Public License.

While Vim is cross-platform, it is most popular on Unix-like operating systems. The program does not rely on menus or icons but offers a command line user interface for users to enter commands directly. Its GUI mode, gVim, adds menus and toolbars, but users can still access full functionality through the command line mode.

For new users, Vim may have a steep learning curve. To assist with this, Vim has a built-in tutorial for beginners and a Vim Users' Manual that details the basic and more advanced features. The program also has a built-in help facility using the :help command that allows users to query and navigate through commands and features.

To install errormarker, simply copy the file errormarker.vim to ~/.vim/plugin. The help file will be automatically installed the next time VIM is launched. For gcc messages, users can distinguish between warnings and errors by placing the following code in their .vimrc: let &errorformat="%f:%l:%c: %t%*[^:]:%m,%f:%l: %t%*[^:]:%m," . &errorformat. If the user is using a different locale than English, they may need to set makeprg=LANGUAGE=C make.
