Keep in mind that you can only exchange gems if they will result in a match.

The game rewards you for making more than one match at a time. Hence, you can earn extra points if you make larger chains in a single move. Additionally, you will notice a bar at the bottom of the screen as you progress through the game. The bar fills up as you make matches. Once the bar is entirely full, you will move on to the next level.

However, the game does get challenging as you progress to higher levels. When no more moves are possible on the board, the game will come to an end. The latest version of the game features a new "Paws" button that has now become available.
