Fenix is an open-source scripting language for developing console-style 2D video games.
I recently had the opportunity to try out Fenix, a free and open-source scripting language that is specifically designed to help create console-like 2D games.
One of the things I really appreciate about Fenix is that it has been developed with 2D in mind. This means that while some game engines may try to offer both 2D and 3D support, Fenix has no intention of doing that. The developers have instead opted for a concentrated focus on 2D game development. While there may be some disappointment among those who have been eagerly awaiting 3D support, the choice to stick to 2D means that Fenix is optimized to make 2D games.
Another great aspect of Fenix is its portability. I was able to run Fenix on a number of different operating systems, including Mac OS X (Darwin), Windows (95 and up, including Windows 2000 & XP), Linux on Intel chips & compatibles, and BeOS. Unfortunately, Fenix does not work over MS-DOS, so if you're hoping to use it on that platform, it won't be an option.
Overall, I felt that Fenix was a great choice for those looking to create 2D games. The concentration on 2D game development means the platform is optimized for that style of game. And its portability means developers can work with Fenix no matter what operating system they use. While Fenix isn't perfect, it's definitely worth considering as an option.
