FR

If you need a file rotator program, FR might just be what you're looking for. As an add-on to DFC, it requires the latter to share a file that's formatted a certain way. From there, FR reads the shared memory and looks for an entry that matches the directories that were passed to it via the command line. Once it finds an entry, FR randomly selects a filename from dirtab and sends it to stdout.

If a directory is missing from dirtab, FR simply moves on and tries the next one on the command line. Interestingly, there's no limit to the number of directories you can include in the FR command line thanks to the operating system.

In case there are any issues, FR won't alert you - it'll quit silently with EXIT_SUCCESS. With its most recent release, FR now supports unlimited directories on the command line, making it an even more powerful file rotator program.
