I recently had the opportunity to review Frankie Linux, a bootable CD containing the Linux desktop operating system for PC. One of the standout features of this Linux distribution is that it runs directly from the CD without requiring installation. Upon boot, all available partitions and data storage devices such as CD-ROM and USB storage devices are recognized and mounted to /mnt/**.
Frankie Linux comes bundled with a whole host of useful applications that make it a versatile solution for your computing needs. Another fantastic feature is that you can copy the CD to a FAT32 partition and run it on your hard disk by launching a ms-dos program called loadlin.
This is essentially a Live-CD, which means that it is a completely operational Linux system contained on one bootable CD that can be run from any CD-ROM drive without requiring the installation of anything on your hard drive. Once you are done using Frankie Linux, you can simply remove the CD from your drive and reboot to return to your previous operating system.
For those who want to run Frankie Linux on their hard disk, copying it to a FAT32 Partition is a viable option. As a distribution based on Slackware, Frankie Linux contains almost all useful software for running a full-fledged desktop, including the Xwindow graphics user interface and other essential applications.
Although Frankie Linux can also be installed manually to a ext2/ext3/Reiserfs partition like other distributions, you will have to configure the boot loader manually. Overall, I was impressed with Frankie Linux's wide range of features and its ease of use. I highly recommend trying it out for yourself.
