Genealogy Graph Generator (GGG) is a comprehensive set of software programs that automates the generation of academic genealogy graphs. This software enables you to identify your advisor, your advisor's advisor, and his/her advisor and so forth. To run GGG, you will need to install graphviz, perl (version 5.8.6 or higher), libgraphviz-perl, libwww-perl, libxml-simple-perl, and libxml-xpath-perl. Additionally, imaging software like ImageMagick is optional for magick+png format and is recommended for optimal performance.
When using GGG, locate a suitable Mathematics Genealogy Project (MGP) page if you are not popular enough to be listed or find the nearest predecessor. For example, Felix Klein's genealogy will serve as a good example in this instance. Another genealogy database, known as TCS, is not yet supported by GGG.
Start by running download-mgp and create an AGML file, download-mgp genealogy.agml. This software performs a directed breadth-first search on advisor relationships in MGP, recording full name, institution, year, and MGP URL. Editing the AGML file is optional, and other forms of correction can be done in this same file. You can also use annotate-wikipedia to identify missing entries and make corrections, which automatically adds Wikipedia URLs.
After you have made all necessary corrections, run ggg to create images and image maps. GGG uses GraphViz, which supports various formats, including regular image formats such as JPEG, GIF, and PNG and vector formats like PS and SVG. magick+png uses SVG as an intermediate format and annotates it before converting to PNG using ImageMagick. This annotation allows for more font flexibility and anti-aliasing. You can also use png to produce regular GraphViz PNG output. cmapx is a client-side HTML area map that allows for easy tooltip and hyperlink adjustments on images.
