Developed by Genesis Development Team
GENESIS (short for GEneral NEural SImulation System) is a versatile simulation platform that was constructed to support the simulation of neural systems ranging from subcellular components and biochemical reactions to complex models of single neurons, simulations of large networks, and systems-level models. The software has been utilized in laboratory classes for neural simulation at various institutions, which include Caltech, the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Crete, Trieste, Bangalore, and Obidos short courses in Computational Neuroscience, and approximately 49 universities. Currently, most GENESIS applications involve realistic simulations of biological neural systems.

The installation process entails selecting the preferred location to install the "genesis" directory tree. If you are making a system-wide installation as "root" user, /usr/local is recommended. For a personal installation, without root privileges, you can use your home directory ("~"). Afterward, change the directory to where the genesis directory is extracted from the archive file genesis2.2.1-linux-bin.tar.gz, either from the downloaded directory or CD.

Then, access the "genesis" directory and execute the setup script, which creates the ".simrc" GENESIS initialization file. Copy .simrc to your home directory, and finally, add the genesis directory to the search path, so that "genesis" can be found from any directory you are in. If you are using bash as your login shell, edit the .bashrc file in your home directory to add the line PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/genesis at the end of the file. If you are using a different command shell, add set path=($path /usr/local/genesis) to the appropriate file. Once the installation is complete, the user can try running GENESIS and experiment with the tutorials recommended in the README file included in the Scripts directory.

In summary, GENESIS is an efficient software that is easy to install and can simulate neural systems on various levels with high accuracy. The installation process requires minimal expertise, and the tutorials allow beginners to familiarize themselves with the software's capabilities. Overall, GENESIS is highly recommended for researchers and students interested in simulating neural systems.
