Gnome-themes is a theme manager designed for the GNOME desktop environment. One noteworthy feature of this module is that all a11y themes inherit from the "gnome" theme, which is found in the gnome-icon-theme module that needs to be manually installed.

Editing the gtkrc files is possible, but the gtkrc.in files for each a11y theme are currently generated by autogen.sh, which concatenates several files together. Thus, it's best to avoid editing gtkrc.in directly and instead modify the appropriate .rc file before re-autogen-ing the files for building.

Adding new icons to all themes at once is easy thanks to the convenient module configuration. Icons that are themed via the icon theming mechanism require modification of each /icons subdirectory individually. Icon size for all LargePrint themes can be modified via configure.in. Editing the color scheme of a particular theme is done by editing its /gtk-2.0/.rc file.

Switching between icon themes is easy in GNOME 2.2 and later thanks to the gnome-theme-manager. Earlier versions of GNOME require manual configuration via GConf or patching the theme switcher dialog.

Creating low contrast icons in GIMP from an original colored icon is simple with the low-contrast-preset.scm GIMP script found in the directory.
