GNU Chess is a chess-playing software that can be installed on a computer to play the game of chess.
I recently had the opportunity to use the GNU Chess project, a computer program designed for playing the Game of Chess. I was pleased to find that GNU Chess enabled most modern computers to play a full game of chess.
While the software has a plain terminal interface, it also supports visual interfaces such as X-Windows "xboard" and Windows-for-PC "winboard". Additionally, its 3-dimensional wooden chess-board protocol for the Novag Chess board allowed me to enjoy a game of chess while being relatively free from the computer itself.
One thing that impressed me about GNU Chess was its continuous updates and improvements. The latest release offered a variety of fixes and portability improvements. These included a minor scoring code tidy, ensuring gnuchessx is included in EXTRA_DIST, and improvements to POSIX thread handling.
Other notable changes included portability fixes to IsTrustedPlayer and lexpgn.l, as well as changes to lexpgn.l to handle some special cases. The update also addressed an issue where a trailing "/" in FEN caused buffer overflow issues.
Overall, I found GNU Chess to be a solid software offering that improved with each release. Anyone passionate about the game of chess should definitely consider checking it out.
