I recently had the opportunity to test out gxmlviewer, an XML viewer software designed for Linux users that comes with a Netscape plugin and a Bonobo control. It was developed specifically for RedHat 7.1 running Ximian Gnome, and while it has received testing with other platforms, the developer cannot guarantee that it will work in every environment.

In order to utilize gxmlviewer, the gtk and gnome libraries must be installed. Additionally, users who wish to compile the Bonobo component will need to install Bonobo as well, which may require installing Ximian Gnome. While most users should encounter no issues with installation, users running RedHat 6.2 have reported issues with RPM files.

Thankfully, installation is relatively straightforward. Users can build source and binary RPMs from source, build a binary RPM from the source RPM, or install using RPM, provided they have downloaded the necessary files. Alternatively, users can manually download the source and run a specific set of commands to complete the installation process.

This latest release of gxmlviewer introduces a few new features as well. Empty tags are now compressed, while CDATA and comment tags are better handled. The software now includes the XML version and encoding header, which is a useful detail for developers. Finally, while the software was originally designed for Linux, users with Windows can now build it for their platform as well. Overall, gxmlviewer offers a useful tool for Linux users seeking an XML viewer with some advanced features.
