Helix Player

I recently tried out the Helix Player, a versatile audio and video player that utilizes the Helix DNA Client engine to provide seamless playback of a range of media file types. The GTK+ version of the player even includes a Mozilla browser plug-in and supports both local file playback and streaming via RTSP/RTP or HTTP.

I was particularly impressed with the video zoom feature which allows for original, double size, or full screen playback. Additionally, the player is compatible with SMIL 2.0, Ogg Vorbis, H.263 video, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and RealPix - a comprehensive selection of file types to ensure that the majority most media files can be played back easily.

Furthermore, Symbian Series60 version also offers comprehensive playback support for local and streaming media files, with compatibility for MP3, AMR narrow band, AMR wide band, RA8, sipro, RV7, RV8, RV9, RV10, H263+, 3GPP rel5 SMIL 2.0, and images among others.

The most recent release introduces playlist support, ALSA audio device support, and even enables surround sound playback. The team have also made numerous fixes and incremental improvements, ensuring any known issues or bugs are handled with care. Overall, the Helix Player is an excellent all-round media player and definitely worth checking out.
