The Historical Event Markup and Linking project is a powerful tool that aims to help users coordinate and navigate historical materials available on the internet. The project includes an XML schema that describes historical events based on their participants, dates, location, and keywords, and also associates them with relevant source materials in print or on the web. Furthermore, the project provides XSLT stylesheets that combine these conforming documents and generate lists, maps, and graphical timelines for ease of reference.

Heml integrates these resources with the Cocoon2 web publishing engine seamlessly. The project offers various key features, such as an RDF export of some recent Japanese history, a timeline of Russia under Stalin (in Russian), an XHTML document focused on Beethoven, an animated map of events related to the study of the history of Greek medicine, a dynamic map of the career of Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, and a table of events during the Meiji Restoration (in Japanese Unicode).

Users can explore various menus above these features to change their view, language, font, base map, calendar, etc. Alternatively, users can follow one of the 'Local Documents' links on the site sidebar to explore all the views on that document. Moreover, users can use the schema to create their own Heml documents, download the Heml webapp, and serve their material as timelines, maps, and historical tables.

The project description may be slightly out of date but does a good job of introducing the ideas behind Heml and outlines the direction this project is heading. The XML schema is fully documented and available for users to create their own Heml documents, download the Heml webapp, and serve their material as timelines, maps, and historical tables.

The software requires Apache Cocoon and Apache Tomcat, and the latest release includes updates for XHTML and SVG rendering that work well with IE and Firefox 1.5. The new map colour scheme is another exciting feature that complements the comprehensive range of useful tools and resources made available by this project. Overall, the Historical Event Markup and Linking project is an excellent software package that provides efficient and effective support for historians and history enthusiasts alike.
