I2P

I2P is a highly effective anonymizing network with extensive encryption layers that provides a secure communication experience. The network is dynamic and distributed, establishing a trustworthy and secure layer for identity-sensitive applications. The various applications that interface with I2P include IRC chat, mail and peer-peer, among others. The project was launched in 2003 with a view to offering an anonymous, secure and uncensorable communication system to support efforts in building a free society.

The I2P network is fully distributed, autonomous, scalable, low latency, anonymous and secure, making it highly resilient and capable of operating successfully in hostile environments. All the features and functionalities of the network are open source and free of cost, providing users with assurance and the benefit of being able to contribute, develop and improve the network.

The goal of the I2P network is to make it more expensive to execute attacks, rather than attempting to achieve perfect anonymity. The applications on top of I2P, such as Syndie, I2P mail and I2PSnark, extend the anonymity and deliver additional functionalities and protection.

As a work in progress, I2P should not be solely relied upon for guaranteed anonymity at present, due to the relatively small size of the network and lack of extensive academic review. The network may not be immune to attacks from those with unlimited resources, given the inherent constraints of low-latency mix networks. I2P routes traffic through other peers, as shown in the above screenshot, to provide a highly secure and trustworthy means of communication.
