iloog

The iloog project is a Gentoo-based LiveCD created by the Ioannina Linux User Group (I.L.U.G.) that targets students and scientists. The goal of iloog is to provide a comprehensive tool that meets the needs of their growing user-base through a continuous "release early, release often" process.

One of the key features of iloog is the ISOLINUX boot loader, which enhances compatibility with older hardware. Additionally, UnionFS filesystem support allows users to write everywhere on the LiveCD and install extra packages. The LiveCD also comes with a graphical X environment through the Fluxbox window manager, as well as many programming editors and IDEs, such as Vim, nano, Anjuta, and Kdevelop.

For scientific applications, iloog offers an array of options, including Octave, Namd, Tinker, and Merlin. Moreover, iloog fits neatly on a 700MB CD.

The latest release of iloog includes QT4 support, a 2.6.22 kernel patched against recent local root exploits, a Pascal compiler (gpc), and another IDE (glade). There have also been minor changes to Fluxbox's menu and theme, new Tang icons for the desktop, and support for via and sis graphics drivers in Xorg. Additionally, iloog now supports new revision control software like git and mercurial. Lastly, some bloated programs have been removed and replaced with lighter ones.
