The beauty of the LDIF format is that Netscape Messenger and LDAP directory servers such as OpenLDAP use this file format directly. IMSP protocol was created to complement IMAP and store additional mail user agent configuration information such as address books. Despite being supported by just a few mailers like Simeon by Esys Corp. and Mulberry, IMSP protocol is considered obsolete. The ACAP protocol was created to replace IMSP, but it has not caught on yet. X.500/LDAP is becoming the standard way to store large e-mail directories.
